Why did I not think of this before.. Sweeten my oatmeal with dates. Medjool dates to be exact. After experimenting with dates blended into a milkshake, more and more devilishly sweet ideas kept popping up in my noggin. My sweet tooth aches just typing this out. And yours should too! Dates are the pinnacle candy of the fruit world, besting, dare I say, honey (yes, honey is not a fruit).

This concoction can be rapidly stirred (literally) and you have a tonne of calories/energy to propel you onward and upward. Front and center are all the benefits of slow acting carbs with the delectable taste and of caramel-like aromas and palettes with none of the gummy bear-induced sugar crashes. This meal will fill your kitchen with cinnamon wafts and a cozy idyllic scene is painted. Gooey and creamy, the oats blend with the melted remains of the dates and cinnamon swirls aplenty. A piping hot bowl of dates oatmeal will entice you both on the hottest days of summer and the dreary colds of winter alike. An evergreen post or pre-workout meal.

Ballparking, this should net you 1000 calories of heaven in a bowl. You will not need to eat again for a while; at least I had no urge to. Since, the coconut oil acts as a suppressant to indulging more, and it even stimulates the metabolism (ie: fat-burning). Try it out for yourself, add nuts such as walnuts for more texture/bite, and please eat slowly to savor the comfort of this homely treat. For a cold pick-me-up (imagine drinking ice cream), try this sweet Date Shake instead. 😋

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup old-fashioned  oats
  • 2 cups water
  • 6-10 medjool dates 🌴, pitted
  • 1-2 tablespoon coconut 🥥 oil
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 64 grams (2 scoops) vanilla-flavored protein powder, optional
  • handful of walnuts, lightly crushed OR heaping spoon of nut butter, optional 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Halve and pit the dates.
  2. Add all the ingredients to a small saucepan over medium heat. 
  3. Stirring frequently, cook until oats are tender, dates are melted, and water has reduced to your desired consistency, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Spoon into bowls and enjoy warm 😊.
