Who says you need a fancy smoker to get fall-off-the-bone ribs? These Oven-Baked Ribs deliver everything you love—juicy, tender meat with a sticky, caramelized crust—all from the comfort of your own kitchen. And for extra credit, throw them on the grill for a quick char and even more sweet, crusty flavor.

Sure, smoker ribs are delicious and show-stopping, but I personally don’t want to overcome the learning curve and barrier to entry (ie. buying a smoker) right now. This low-and-slow oven method consistently produces fantastic results, more than adequately fulfilling any barbecue craving. A simple but powerful dry rub, a little patience, and a final brush of homemade barbecue sauce turns humble grocery-store ribs into something worthy of a weekend feast.

These ribs are perfect for summer barbecues, family dinners, or whenever you’re in the mood for serious comfort food without the hassle. The meat literally pulls away from the bone with almost no effort, and the house smells incredible while they bake, proving you don’t need fancy equipment to make restaurant-quality barbecue at home. They’re tender, flavorful, and guaranteed to impress. Serve with the best cornbread, coleslaw, beans, your other favorite sides, and ready for sticky fingers and happy faces around the table.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2-3 racks spareribs or baby back ribs
  • ¾ cup yellow mustard, divided
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup homemade barbeque sauce, or favorite store-bought

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line baking sheets with foil and optionally fit them with a wire rack.
  2. Prepare the ribs for the rub by patting them dry with paper towels and remove the membrane from the underside.
  3. Optionally allow ribs to dry in the fridge overnight on a wire rack over a baking sheet.
  4. Mix the rub by combining the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt and pepper.
  5. Slather both sides of each rib rack with a moderate layer of mustard and rub it into the meat. Then sprinkle the rub on both sides and massage into the meat.
  6. Wrap each rack in parchment paper then in aluminum foil.
  7. Place the wrapped ribs on the baking sheets then bake for 2 ½-3 hours, until the meat is tender and tears away from the bone easily.
  8. Once the meat is ready, remove the racks from the oven, uncover the top foil layers and carefully drain out the cooking liquids.
  9. Brush each rack with some barbeque sauce then return the ribs to the oven, uncovered, for another 10-15 minutes, until the sauce caramelizes.
  10. Optional step: finish off the racks in the grill for a few minutes on each side after slathering on a thin layer of additional sauce.
  11. Chop up the racks into desired portions and enjoy!
