Golden milk tastes every bit as luxurious as it looks. Bold, earthy turmeric shines beautifully as the star flavor in this velvety smooth, relaxing elixir of a drink. Warmed milk gets a boost of exotic flair from floral, fragrant spices to deliver a savory, sweet, and sunny sip of something unexpected and lovely.
I was recently reminded of my fondness of golden milk after surprisingly seeing it on the menu at Coffee Commissary. While I’ve only ever had it warm before, the iced version was a great, refreshing post-workout treat that gave a jolt of energy. It also rekindled my once-common habit of stirring up a batch of the golden stuff at home. My brother, usually strictly a black coffee/espresso guy, frequents the coffee shop regularly, but had never tried it before and surprisingly wouldn’t stop talking about it all day; mostly about how I HAD to make it at home.
While the golden milk they offer at Commissary definitely whetted the appetite, the homemade version is much better. The shop buys a pre-made blend from a manufacturer and dilutes it with additional milk and/or ice, so it’s a more subtle experience. Controlling the amounts of the spices and sweetener, makes for a richer and more flavorful milk. If you’re feeling really adventurous, opt for fresh, grated ginger 🫚 (and even turmeric) and you’ll get a kick of spice along with the rest of the bold, warm flavors; strain out the chunks with a sieve if using fresh roots or if you simply want to ensure no grit gets through.
I can’t decide which I like better: the hot or cold version, but I think the context in which you’re enjoying it matters. If you want a nice, zingy refreshment to re-energize and treat yourself, go for the chilled version. The warm option is perfect for sipping slowly at your leisure or in the evening to relax and get comfortable before bed. Keep in mind not to add coconut oil to the milk mixture before chilling if making the cold version, as it will solidify and add lumps to the otherwise smooth milk. If you do still want to use coconut milk in the cold variation, just stir melted coconut oil directly into the serving glass. Whether warm or cold, there is no better way to describe this serendipitous drink other than GOLDEN.
