A stack of Homemade Waffle Cones nested into each other on a baking sheet

Recreate the intoxicating allure of your favorite childhood ice cream parlor by rolling up a batch of these textbook Homemade Waffle Cones. You know that heavenly vanilla and caramelized sugar smell that wafts into your face as you enter the shop not sure yet what flavor you’re getting in a cup or cone? Once that smell dances liltingly under your nose, you’re sure: scoop absolutely anything into a waffle cone and you’re a happy camper 🏕️. 👃👃👃

This Homemade Waffle Cone endeavor was part of a 3-fold larger project that began nearly 5 years ago and evolved into a state of sheer childlike bliss. It all started when I gifted the KitchenAid ice cream maker attachment to Mr. Slim Fatty 🧔‍♂️ several Christmases ago. It was kind of one of those gifts that’s intended for the recipient but kind of also for yourself. I knew he’d love it, but I also knew he’d assign the task of ice cream making to me. Not a bad problem. Fast-forward a few years, and the next step was naturally a chest freezer for Mister’s birthday. Proudly, this is still considered one of the best gifts, to date. The KitchenAid attachment bowl happily lives in that freezer at all times, making an emergency batch of ice cream always possible. And finally, this year, it chanced on me that a waffle cone maker would be the perfect Father’s Day present, and bring this experience full circle to its destined culmination. Then the fun began.

These Homemade Waffle Cones should be a delicious and fun part of your household’s ice cream consumption. All you need is a waffle cone maker and this simple recipe to make a batch of these yummy pointed cookies in about 30 minutes. They are crispy, sweet, and make the perfect companion for easy Homemade Ice Cream. Feel free to use regular AP flour, but the bread flour adds that slight bit of chewiness that makes the cones sturdy enough to hold nice big scoops of ice cream. The combination of white and brown sugar also contributes to the right balance of sweetly crisp and chewy. A healthy dose of vanilla and cinnamon make for that dreamy 💭 flavor and smell that will fill up your whole house and bring back the nostalgia of the Baskin Robbins you used to get treated to as a kid. Making these waffle cones at home is super fun and satisfying knowing they’re your very own to fill with your very own ice cream. Have fun!

INGREDIENTS

  • ⅔ cup bread flour, or all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt 🧂
  • 2 eggs 🥚🥚
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted 🧈
  • ¼ cup whole milk 🥛
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Set the waffle cone maker dial to medium, close lid and preheat.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon and salt. Set aside
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugars until well combined and fluffy.
  4. Add the flour mixture and beat it well for a few minutes to work up the bread flour. Next, add in the butter, milk, and vanilla extract and mix well.
  5. Pour 3-4 tablespoons of the batter into the center of the waffle iron, lower the lid and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until your desired level of doneness being careful not to burn the waffles.
  6. Using the tip of the cone roller, lift the edge of the waffle and slide the cone under to lift it out of the iron.
  7. Transfer the waffle to a tea towel or paper towel and begin quickly rolling the waffle around the cone roller. Hold it for a few seconds until the cone is cool and set.
  8. Line the done cones on a baking sheet and repeat with the remaining batter.
  9. Allow the cones to cool completely before filling with Homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and enjoy! 🍦
