A class of Iced Matcha Latte with Boba

My fascination with matcha 🍵 lattes started a few months ago after watching mesmerizing videos of these glorious green tea concoctions being prepared. Having always been a tea drinker, I was easily convinced of the magic of matcha and decided I wanted to start a new habit. I stocked up on the powder and almond milk, bought a cute new ice tray, and dusted off my seldom-used milk frother. I somehow resisted investing in the ceremonial matcha bowl, scoop, and bamboo whisk, telling myself I didn’t absolutely need them to enjoy this new daily treat. The addition of boba was the extra little bit of occasional fun to indulge in this tasty drink, all from the comfort of home.

The base of the matcha latte is very simple and hard to mess up. Mix the matcha powder with a bit of warm water until it’s frothy, then add in honey. Set that aside then get the boba softened up in simmering water for a few minutes. Cool it, mix it with brown sugar until nice and syrupy, then plop those cuties into a glass. Fill up the glass with ice then milk of choice almost to the top before finishing off with the frothy matcha mix. It’s such an easily customizable drink, so feel free to have fun adding your favorite sweeteners, flavors, or spices. I sometimes opt for regular sugar instead of honey and I like to add vanilla and cinnamon for additional flavor. Enjoy these with or without the boba and conveniently without having to wait in line at your local coffee shop.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a small bowl or measuring cup, add the matcha powder, honey and warm water. Whisk with a milk frother or bamboo whisk until frothy. Set aside.
  2. Fill up a small saucepan with water, set over medium heat, and cover until boiling. Add in the tapioca boba pearls and stir lightly.
  3. When the boba floats to the surface of the water, cover the saucepan and simmer for 2 minutes. Turn off the heat and continue simmering another 2-3 minutes, until the boba is tender (or until desired doneness).
  4. Remove the boba from the saucepan and submerge in cold water for 30 seconds before straining into a dry bowl and mixing with the brown sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  5. Add the boba and brown sugar syrup to the bottom of a glass. Then add the desired amount of ice and fill up the glass with milk. Top off with the prepared matcha.
  6. Give it all a good stir with a boba straw until all the layers are mixed and enjoy!
