My love for matcha has steadily blossomed over the past year. Nearly every day during nap time, I indulge in the therapeutic ritual of preparing my savored Iced Matcha Latte. It’s become a daily habit I very much look forward to. Currently in the middle of another signature October heatwave, we had a very brief cold stint just a few weeks ago. I couldn’t fathom enjoying an icy beverage, but still wanted my beloved matcha. Surprised that I’d never ventured to try it before, I decided to make a warm latte instead. As much as I love my iced matchas, I daresay I might prefer this cozier version.
I recently finished up a tin of extremely smooth, creamy superior quality Ippodo matcha powder in my iced lattes, so when I reverted to my culinary grade version, I felt the difference. However, something about serving it warm and with perfectly frothy steamed milk instantly improves the experience. Brown sugar, cinnamon, matcha, and milk are all you need to make this really calming drink that provides a gentle source of energy and quiets your nerves. Simply mix up the matcha powder with hot water, brown sugar and cinnamon easily with a milk frother. Then use the same frother to whisk some warm milk–I use my trusty Armenian coffee pot to gently steam the milk on the stove–and top that magical cloud-like ☁️ layer over the matcha. Finish with a dusting of cinnamon and sip away.
The brown sugar and cinnamon add just the right hint of sweetness and spice to the slightly earthy matcha, while the frothed milk adds a creaminess that gradually mixes in with the green tea to make for a beautifully blended latte. I have tried other milk varieties, like almond milk or low-fat, but I highly recommend using whole milk since nothing else froths up quite as fluffy and thick and this is vital to making a super smooth, luxuriously creamy matcha.
Once you see how easy and delicious this comforting drink is, you will never opt for the overrated coffeeshop 🧜 version again. It wins on taste, nutritional value, and beats waiting in line. Enjoy some much-deserved me-time with a simple, soothing mug of a perfect homemade Matcha Latte.
